What clothes do I wear for a beach portrait session?
A better question is what clothes are best for a portrait session in general. That depends. In recent years with the influx of digital a more causal approach has been popular. We like it too. Every era has it's own fashion and style. Keep in mind there are two different fields of photography that have been crossing over each other. Fashion photographs and portrait photographs are different. The goal of a fashion photo shoot is to sell clothes. The models know how to pose and are very slim. With extensive hair and makeup, they all look flawless. It's about the clothes. In portrait photography it's about the face. It's regular people. With digital retouching cream we can all look good too but it's not generally about the clothes.
Clothes and backgrounds should complement not clash. When they clash the eye goes to the clothes first. When they are in harmony the eye goes to the face and the eyes. So - it depends. What kind of a session are you looking for?
Vacation portrait sessions
Keep in mind that you're whites don't have to match exactly nor your khaki colors. They just need to be in the same tonal range. Also unless it's a high school senior portrait session it's best to keep patterns to the minimum. Especially for larger groups. It's just too busy for the eye.
Beach vacation portraits are generally on white or khaki sand. To complement the scene, we recommend all white or khaki and white.
Paris vacation portraits are in located in gardens or the cityscape. Since it is Paris and the fashion capitol of the world, we recommend dressy clothes. Darker tones not black work best.
Desert vacation portraits look best with dark jewel tones or shades of khaki.
Snow vacation portraits are best done with all white clothes or white and grey.
