Destin & South Walton
Are you ready for the 2014 family vacation? What to do on vacation in Destin and South Walton Florida? Every year in January, we update our website with the latest and greatest about the Florida panhandle. Below you'll find links to our favorite vendors, restaurants, and videos.
Where to find a great vacation rental? I just spent several days with the Newman-Dailey vacation rental company. I met and photographed most of the staff for their new website. Fantastic group of people! Happy, friendly, and ready to assist you in having a great vacation experience. Being local, they will be there to make sure everything goes smoothly. I've rented many places in my travels and having a real, local contact is the usually the best experience. Click here for their website specials and the home page.
Where to eat in Destin, Florida? This is the first question the photographers are always asked. There are many local options on the Destin Harbor. This year I'm going to highlight Harbor Docks. They have been local before local was cool. They buy their seafood fresh off the docks and also offer breakfast. The view is breathtaking. I recommend a sunset dinner on the back deck. With a world famous sushi chef, you can't go wrong with this one.

Boogies is Destin's original water activities rental company. You'll find pontoon boats, jet skies, etc. there. Along the Harbor Walk at the foot of the Destin bridge, you'll find lots of charter boats. We recommend the Destiny Princess. They are one of the few boats in a new pilot program for catching red snapper in a responsible enviromental program. This will ensure future generations will enjoy great tasting fresh gulf seafood.
South Walton things to do on your family vacation in 2014
South Walton has quickly become the hottest new destination- with many names! Let me explain a few. The area is called Santa Rosa Beach and it's Walton county. The beaches and resorts are all located in the southern part and it became known as "South Walton" for locals and visitors. The road that runs closest and parallel to the beach is called county road 30A. Along this road there are local names for the "wide places". Each place developed into it's little cluster or shops and restaurants. Starting from the west the names are Dune Allen, Blue Mountain, Grayton, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove, Seacrest, Alys beach, Rosemary, and Inlet beaches.
What to do in South Walton on vacation? There are three state parks for a tour of real Florida: Topsail Hill, Grayton Beach, and Deer Lake. You'll see Florida the way I remember it growing up: Sand dunes towering over the beaches, wild life, seaoats, and miles of Emerald water. Along 30A there is a walking and bike trail too. Catch a glimpse of the rare coastal dune lakes with a canoe back water tour.
Enjoy dinner and a movie at the Grand Blvd the new Carmike movie theatre. There are also many new restaurants that just opened there. Tommy Bahama's, PF Chang, and Mitchell's fish market. Check out Seaside's website for outdoor concerts, festivals, and fireworks. The local hang out at Grayton's Red Bar or enjoy a Sunday morning breakfast at the Hibicusus House.
My favorite little coffee and snack place is Miss Lucille's gossip parlor. Across the road from the public beach access on Road 393. It's a nice place to get off the beach for lunch with their new sushi bar or an ice cream cone. Stop by and say hello. I like to sit by the window or on the outdoor patio just people watching.
